Fly Fishing at Nueltin Fly In Lodges Each year, we see dozens of anglers unpack their fly rod and reels along with their other favorite spinning and casting equipment. There may be no better method for catching northern pike than with a #9 or #10 wt fly rod and a large pike fly.
Pike will often follow your spoons, spinner baits and other metal hardware right up to the boat, only to turn away without striking. A well presented Dahlberg Diver or Lefty’s Deceiver will generate an instant hook-up when all other lures in your tackle box are rejected. Many other pike flies will have the same result. It’s not uncommon for a well equipped fly angler will routinely out fish a spinning or casting presentation 10 to 1! There is just something magic about a flies ability to start and stop, and just hang motionless in the water. It really is a great way to catch northern pike when the weather conditions are right (light winds). Best conditions are moderate wind conditions, fishing shallow bays in early June or over cabbage weeds in July and August. It’s an experience like no other! In June and in the Fall there’s also an opportunity to catch lake trout using fly fishing equipment.
