Spinning/Casting Tackle Recommendations

Fishing Pike at NueltinRods:
Northern Pike and Lake Trout:

• 6’-7’ Medium-heavy action spinning or bait casting rods.

Reels:
Northern Pike and Lake Trout:

• Medium to med/heavy spinning reels (10-12 lb. test line) and casting reels (17-20 lb. test line).

Lure Selection: Barb-less Requirement

*Note: Manitoba law and Nueltin Fly In Lodges management require
barb-less hooks and only one (1) single hook per lure.
(This will effect the lures you select and pack to bring North with you.) Barbs can be pinched down with pliers in the boat. Barb’s don’t have to be filed flat before you arrive at the lodge.)

Northern Pike

Proven fish catching lures may include a variety of bass spinner baits, Dare Devils, Five-O-Diamonds, Johnson Silver Minnow, #4 -#5 Mepps Spinners, Suick “jerk baits”, top-water plugs, Sluggo type worms, and a “Jig’n Pig” combination can also work wonders in the cabbage weeds. Check with the lodge tackle shop for current “hot lures”. *Leaders: Nine inch ball-bearing swivels/steel leaders are highly recommended to prevent Northern Pike from cutting your line. Steel leaders are not needed for lake trout fishing.

Lake Trout

Early in the season while the lake water is still very cold (50-55 degrees F), lake trout can be caught casting and flat-line trolling shallow running spoons off rocky shoals and points of islands. When the trout move into the deep holes (50’-100’) seeking colder water and schools of bait fish, vertical jigging 2-4 oz. jigs tipped with Mr. Twister tails or Berkley Power Baits is the lure of choice. Early or late season, trolling with weighted, three-way swivel rigs or portable down rigger is probably the most effective method for catching lake trout consistently. This is true because you are holding your lure in the “fish zone” for long periods of time, and as you troll you are covering large amounts of real-estate looking for concentrations of fish.

Arctic Grayling

Rod: Ultra-light spinning reels spooled with 4-6 pound Trilene XT.
Reels: 4-6 weight fly rod/reel or spinning reel.
Lures: Mepps, Panther Martin & Blue Fox spinners in size 00 or 0 (smallest size they make). A spinning rigged with a small bobber 2-3 feet up the line from a fly can be very effective. The bobber will act as a strike-detector. Use a Fur Ant (black & cinnamon colors), Royal Wulff, Caddis, Adams, others. The dominate color choice is usually black. Fly hook size: #12-#18.
